EMD Millipore Expands Biomanufacturing Sciences and Training Center in Japan and Announces Opening of New Location in Tokyo

EMD Millipore announced the opening of a new Biomanufacturing Sciences Training Center (BSTC) facility in Tokyo. The facility is designed to help biopharmaceutical companies develop manufacturing processes and find solutions to processing challenges in collaboration with engineers from EMD Millipore. Through the simulation of manufacturing process with products, EMD Millipore's Biomanufacturing Sciences Training Centers allow customers to test equipment and devices, evaluate manufacturing processes, and conduct operator training. This extensive training helps biopharmaceutical companies expedite system implementation and enhances the efficiency of manufacturing process development, while also providing quality assurance validations compliant with GMP standards and various regulations, thus lowering the risk when introducing new systems. The new facility in Japan comprises a Pilot Scale Zone equipped with EMD Millipore's Mobius(R) series of single-use components for everything from culture to filtration and purification, allowing for total demonstration testing from upstream to downstream processes. There is also a Process Development and Application Test Zone for various types of testing for process development and optimization, a Seminar & Training Zone, and a Gallery Zone with displays of EMD Millipore products. Staff membrs with expert knowledge provide multifaceted support to client companies for biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

EMD Millipore Launches the EZ-Fit Filtration Unit, a Disposable Filtration Device for Bioburden Testing

EMD Millipore has launched the EZ-Fit Filtration Unit, a disposable filtration device for bioburden testing. The system is more efficient than traditional methods, resulting in increased reliability and streamlined workflows. The unit, which conforms to international standards (USP/EP) and water testing regulations, can be used for filtration of liquid samples including water, raw materials, in-process samples and final products EZ-Fit Filtration Unit delivers optimal microbial recovery and more reliable results. The shape of the funnel and the plastic material minimize sample residue to ensure that the complete sample volume reaches the membrane surface. The design reduces the risk of leaks and prevents sample from by-passing the membrane to allow filtration of the entire volume. Following sample filtration, the membrane is perfectly flat; when transferred, the entire surface of the membrane is in contact with the culture media. The EZ-Fit Filtration Unit is pre-sterilized and the lid remains in place during filtration to prevent contamination. To further maintain sample integrity, a rim prevents forceps from accidentally touching the membrane filtration area during transfer. To facilitate operation and save time, the EZ-Fit Filtration Unit allows one-handed funnel removal. In addition, the clear funnel with a larger diameter enables easier sample pouring and visualization of the end of filtration. Level indicators on the funnel eliminate the need to turn it when placing on the filtration support. EZ-Fit Filtration Units are available in 100 mL or 250 mL funnel sizes and are either individually bagged or packaged in bulk. Additionally, the units are stackable to save space in the laboratory. EZ-Fit Filtration Units are easily integrated with the EZ-Fit Manifold, a universal laboratory filtration system, and are part of the EZ-product family designed to facilitate microbiology workflow in quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) laboratories. Other products include: EZ-Pak Dispenser Curve which provides high-speed, sterile membrane dispensing with no-touch operation; and EZ-Stream Pump which provides direct transfer of liquids to eliminate repeated handling of liquid waste containers.

EMD Millipore Announces Clinical Research, Licensing and Joint Development Agreement with Sysmex Corporation

EMD Millipore announced a clinical research, licensing and joint development agreement with Sysmex Corporation. This collaboration will use EMD Millipore's flow cytometry technology as a platform to accelerate the creation of new, more powerful diagnostic tools for research in blood disorders. If successful, Sysmex and EMD Millipore will collaborate on developing the imaging flow technology platform for future commercialization in hematology. Sysmex is conducting a clinical study assessing EMD Millipore's Amnis imaging flow cytometry technology for hematologic disorders such as leukemia. Once clinical research is complete, both parties intend to combine the imaging flow cytometry technology with Sysmex's technologies to develop new imaging flow cytometry technology that will generate image data of molecular (protein) expression status, as well as the identification of abnormal cells in the blood. Sysmex aims to promote the creation of new diagnostic technologies that will lead to the realization of personalized medicine and contribute to the advancement of healthcare by meeting increasingly diverse and sophisticated testing needs. The first step in the EMD Millipore-Sysmex collaboration will be a clinical trial of the Amnis technology using patient blood samples to detect and characterize leukemic conditions and other hematologic disorders.
