In November 1996, Metropolitan Bancorp was acquired by Washington Federal, Inc. Previously, Metropolitan Bancorp was engaged in attracting deposits from the general public through its offices; and using those funds, together with borrowings, to originate loans secured by existing single-family residences and to purchase securities, which were backed by such loans. The company also originated loans secured by existing small multifamily residences; and loans for the construction of single family, and such multifamily residences.
