Scribd Signs Global Deal with Smashwords to Offer Readers 225,000 Books by Independent Authors

Scribd, Inc. announced it has signed a deal with Smashwords to make available Smashwords titles on Scribd. Smashwords brings Scribd a catalog of over 225,000 e-books from 70,000 authors and publishers. There are two components to the agreement with Smashwords. Smashwords will supply books to Scribd's new e-book subscription service, where for $8.99 per month subscribers can enjoy unlimited reading. Additionally, Smashwords e-books will also be available for individual sale to Scribd customers. The partnership offers Smashwords authors the ability to distribute their books across Scribd's services on the iPhone, iPad, Android mobile devices, and web browsers. As part of the deal, Scribd will help Smashwords authors by providing e-book marketing tools such as proprietary author data and merchandising to Scribd's audience of 80+ million users from around the world.

Scribd will charge $9 per month for a service that offers unlimited access to most of HarperCollins' back catalogue, as well as an assortment of other books from smaller publishers.

BookBaby has announced the further expansion of its network through a new partnership with Scribd, Inc. Scribd's iPaper technology displays each title in its own web-based iPaper viewer, allowing users to embed the document on other websites and blogs while preserving its original format. Readers can sample up to 10% of an eBook for free, after which point they must pay to access the complete document -- readable "in the cloud" from any computer or mobile device. In addition to Scribd, BookBaby's eBook distribution network includes Apple's iBookstore (for iPad), Amazon (for Kindle), Barnes & Noble (for Nook), Kobo, Copia, Sony Reader Store, Gardners, Baker & Taylor, eBookPie, and eSentral (the biggest eBook retailer in Asia). With BookBaby, independent authors keep 100% of the net revenue generated from their eBook sales.
