Airports Company South Africa Slaps BP Southern Africa, Chevron, Engen, Exel, Shell SA and Total SA with ZAR 15 Million Lawsuit
Jul 28 14
Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has demanded ZAR 15 million in a lawsuit slapped on six petrochemical giants for the embarrassing three-day fuel shortage that threatened to ground carriers flying from OR Tambo International Airport two years ago. According to documents filed at the South Gauteng High Court by the government-owned airport management services and logistics firm, BP Southern Africa, Chevron, Engen, Exel (now held by Sasol), Shell SA and Total SA have been asked to pay Acsa ZAR 15 million plus 15.5% annual interest. Acsa says it inked a five-year deal with the six firms in April 2011 to receive, store, supply, distribute and convey aviation fuel at a bulk fuel location at the OR Tambo International Airport. But, the busiest airport in Africa witnessed shortages for three days from November 16 to 18, 2012. The situation was so bad that some of the airport's providers had to transport fuel from Durban by rail and through pipeline. Acsa was told on 15th November that year of the impending shortages of usable jet fuel. The six firms have been asked to pay Acsa ZAR 5 million for each day there is a shortage and the total volume of usable fuel must not be less than three times the daily average, in terms of the deal.
DHL Express Signs Retail Partnership with Engen
Nov 19 13
DHL Express and Engen have signed a retail partnership, in a bid to provide customers with better access to global express services. A consumer looking to send documents or parcels overseas can simply walk into an Engen service station to send their shipment, ensuring greater convenience and accessibility to the powerful global network which DHL offers. This includes all domestic and international shipments to major centres across over 220 countries worldwide. The project, which will pilot at four Engen service stations in the Namibian capital Windhoek, will then be rolled out in phases. Botswana, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Tanzania are earmarked for the second phase. Consumers will also be able to take advantage of DHL's new product offering, Express Easy, at the Engen outlets. Express Easy provides an easy way to send documents or parcels, as consumers can choose an envelope or one of seven box sizes and enjoy a fixed price for that size, rather than paying a rate based on the weight of the parcel.
PetroSA Reportedly Considers Acquisition Of Engen
Jul 16 13
Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (SOC) Ltd. is considering buying the controlling stake in Engen Ltd., according to two people with knowledge of an announcement made to Engen staff. Petroliam Nasional Berhad holds 80% of Engen and Pembani Group (Pty) Ltd holds rest. PetroSA will conduct a due diligence process taking from three to six months before a final decision on the acquisition is made, the people said, citing Datuk Ahmad Nizam Salleh, Chief Executive Officer of Engen, who addressed staff on July 15. “PetroSA has over the last couple of years indicated a willingness to look for downstream opportunities,” the company said in an e-mailed response to questions. “To fulfill this objective, we have over this period been engaged in a series of negotiations with various potential partners,” it said, without commenting further. Tania Landsberg, a spokeswoman for Engen, declined to comment.
