Greyhound Canada to Reduce Service on 15 Major Routes in B.C
Jan 17 13
Greyhound Canada will cut service on many major bus routes in B.C. because of a drop in the number of passengers and rising fuel and maintenance costs. The B.C. Passenger Transportation Board accepted Greyhound's October 3 application for the cuts in a decision released. The successful application means Greyhound will stop service between Victoria and the Mount Washington ski resort. It will reduce service on 15 other routes. Reduced service could be seen on some routes as early as next week, except for routes which run into Alberta where a 30-day notice is required. Ridership has been gradually falling for several years and the company is running too many buses. In its application, the company said it lost $14.1 million on scheduled passenger operations in B.C. in the 2012 fiscal year. It also claims to have been hurt by competing provincial government transit and buses operated by Northern and Interior health authorities. The reductions will result in savings of about $6.5 million a year, which he added will be put into upgraded buses on existing routes. Greyhound will launch the Greyhound Express in B.C. sometime this spring, which will offer passengers more comfortable buses with more leg room and Wi-Fi. The reduction in frequency of trips will vary by route.
