Environmental groups filed a lawsuit against Gulf Power Co. in federal court, alleging that a coal ash impoundment at a Florida Panhandle power plant has been polluting a nearby river with toxic heavy metals for years. The groups, including Earthjustice, Waterkeeper Alliance and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, compared the ash ponds at the 92-MW Scholz coal-fired plant to a Duke Energy Corp.-owned site that gained national attention this year when it seeped tens of thousands of tons of waste from coal combustion into the Dan River in North Carolina.
