Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation announced that it has named a new chief investment officer to manage its $1.8 billion portfolio. Mary McLean, who has worked at the foundation since 1996, succeeds Harold Bradley, who retired in August. McLean has been serving as the foundation's managing director of investments. The appointment was announced by the foundation's board chairman, Tom McDonnell, who will become Kauffman's president and chief executive officer effective January 1, 2013.
Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation announced that Thomas A. McDonnell is the foundation's new president and chief executive officer, and fellow trustee Janice Kreamer has become chairman of the board. McDonnell, who most recently was CEO of DST Systems Inc., had been serving as the foundation's chairman since 2006 and has been a Kauffman trustee since 2003. Kreamer, who formerly headed the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, has been a Kauffman trustee since 2006. McDonnell succeeds Carl Schramm, who was the Kauffman Foundation's CEO from 2002 until the end of 2011, when the board requested his resignation. Since January, Kauffman trustee Benno Schmidt has been acting as interim CEO while the board considered candidates to succeed Schramm. McDonnell has served or serves on a variety of nonprofit, civic and corporate boards, including previous service at Garmin, where co-founder and CEO Min Kao praised McDonnell as right for the top Kauffman job.
Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation announced that its chief investment officer since 2007, Harold Bradley, retired on August 6, 2012, the same day another Kauffman higher-up started a new job elsewhere. In his absence, the foundation's managing director of investments, Mary McLean, will take on day-to-day responsibilities tied to the supervision of the investment staff, which handles Kauffman's $1.8 billion global portfolio.
