Luminant to Shut Down Martin Lake Coal Unit
Sep 18 13
Luminant wants to shut down one of the coal units at the Martin Lake power plant in December, but it has nothing to do with pending environmental lawsuits or restructuring of its parent company, Energy Future Holdings. The 750-megawatt coal unit at Martin Lake is one of three units in far East Texas. Units 1 and 2 would continue operating as normal. Unit 3 would resume operations in June when the peak demand starts. Unit 3 was selected because it has a separate fuel yard and a major outage was already planned for the unit in the spring. It's coal plants have faced lawsuits from the U.S. Department of Justice and criticism from area physicians for its emissions. The closure is not needed to comply with environmental laws or regulations. The company already received approval to suspend operations at the Monticello plant in Rusk County on Oct. 1, 2013.
