A couple filed a wrongful death lawsuit on Nov. 11, 2011, saying their newborn baby suffocated while being carried in an Eddie Bauer sling product. George G. Gentzell II was carrying his newborn daughter in an Eddie Bauer Sling & Hip Carrier on Nov. 15, 2009, while out with his family, according to the suit filed in Cook County Court by Gentzell and Katrena L. Gentzel, the girl's mother. The sling caused the infant to suffer positional asphyxia that led to her death on Nov. 19, 2009, the suit claims. The suit claims the sling caused her body to curl forward and forced her chin to her chest, which causes asphyxia. The material of the sling had the potential to enclose an infant and obstruct her mouth and nose, causing a high risk of suffocation, according to the suit. The suit also claims the sling does not have a safety mechanism to prevent suffocation. The sling's design allegedly prevents the person wearing it from noticing that an infant is suffocating. The 45-count suit claims strict liability and negligence against the Target Corporation, where the product was purchased as well as Goldbug Inc. and Gold Inc., the manufacturers of the Eddie Bauer Sling & Hip Carrier.
