UBM, LLC Key Developments
United Business Media LLC Presents at SLG Cloud Commission Conference and Report Release, Feb-16-2012 12:30 PM. Venue: Mountain View, California, United States. Speakers: Tony Uphoff, Chief Executive Officer of TechWeb.
United Business Media LLC has confirmed it has selected new headquarters, signing a prelet for 105,648 sq ft at 240 Blackfriars Road, SE1. UBM has signed a 15-year lease for the top nine floors of the 20-storey building, which is being developed by the Great Ropemaker Partnership, a 50:50 joint venture between Great Portland Estates and Ropemaker Properties. The publisher of magazines including Farmers Guardian and Information Week, will pay 4.9m per year, equating to 47 per sq ft for the deal. GRP will deliver the space in shell condition only passing to UBM a contribution to fit out the space to category A, of 6m. UBM will receive 36 months rent-free from lease commencement, with 39 months rent-free on the 11th floor only. The 237,000 sq ft GRP development is due for completion in March 2014.
Howell announced that the Second Intermediate People's Court of Beijing Municipality has ruled on GPC v. UBM lawsuit, in which the Game Publishing Committee (GPC) of the Publishers Association of China sued United Business Media LLC (UBM), organizer of Game Developers Conference in the US, for its anti-competitive practices against China Game Developers Conference co-organized by GPC and Howell. The court (Civil Ruling No. 19793, 2009) rules that UBM's false propaganda on relevant websites and in publicity materials constitutes unfair competition. It also decides that "Game Developers Conference", of which UBM claimed to be the sole owner, has not been approved by the trademark authority in China. Trademark registration is subject to local jurisdiction: exclusive right to any registered trademark in Mainland China has to be granted by relevant PRC authorities. Therefore, UBM's claim (on relevant websites and web pages) to be the exclusive owner of the trademark "Game Developers Conference China (GDC China)" and any intellectual property related is unfounded and thus constitutes false propaganda. So the court rules for GPC: the defendant UBM shall cease any relevant anti-competitive practices and compensate the GPC for its economic losses. The costs of the case will be borne by UBM.
