ASOCS Ltd. and Wind River Collaborate to Enable High Capacity Deployments of Virtual Base Stations

ASOCS Ltd. is collaborating with Wind River to enable rapid and reliable mass market deployments of virtual Base Stations. Service providers are adopting the ETSI ISG Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) architectures in order to accelerate the deployment of new value-added services while significantly reducing network capital and operating expenses. The virtualization of the Mobile Base Station itself is the last bastion of proprietary and expensive hardware, preventing networks from maximizing the benefits of datacentre type network topology. In many ways the Base Station is just another appliance to be virtualized in the NFV era. Similar to other network functions, it needs to comply with the fundamental approach as outlined in the ETSI NFV framework. Yet, virtualizing a base station presents tremendous challenges, specifically in adhering to real time performance processing which is so critical in wireless Broadband 4G/5G technologies. ASOCS's virtual Base Station, based on its advanced Modem Processing Unit (MPU) solution and Modem Programing Language (MPL) for Baseband and Signal-processing as a Service (SPaaS) approach combined with Wind River Linux present a breakthrough in data plane performance of the Mobile Base Station. Wind River Introduces Industry Profiles for Next-Generation VxWorks Real-Time Operating System

Wind River has introduced industry profiles for the latest version of its VxWorks(R) real-time operating system (RTOS). The profiles enrich VxWorks 7 with a range of highly relevant capabilities that help customers meet industry and technology requirements needed to address the new market opportunities created by the Internet of Things (IoT). The industry-specific profiles include features and enhancements pertaining to safety, security, connectivity, manageability, user interface, and graphics. The following profiles are now available: networking Profile that enables manufacturers of network infrastructure to rapidly create, test, deploy, maintain, and manage high-quality network devices, wired or wireless. Industrial Profile which provides industrial device manufacturers with essential multimedia and connectivity middleware, including drivers and protocols for connected devices on the factory floor, wireless peripherals, and other devices within the network infrastructure. Medical Profile which helps manufacturers of medical devices with human machine interface and connectivity middleware specifically tailored for the needs of medical device manufactures. Consumer Profile that offers a fast-boot, small-footprint, low-power run-time environment ideal for smaller form factor connected devices such as wearables, mobile handhelds, digital imaging devices, residential gateways, and broadband access devices. The company has also announced that VxWorks is the major commercial RTOS to be enabled on the Intel(R) Quark SoC X1000, further positioning it as the RTOS of choice for applications requiring low power and small footprint. The VxWorks 7 and Intel Quark offering is highly suitable to enable products across the system from the device to the cloud.
Wind River Teams with TTTech for Autonomous Driving and Advanced Automotive Applications

Wind River announced that it is working with TTTech to develop safety-related electronic control units (ECUs) based on networked multi-core system-on-chips (SoCs) for advanced automotive applications, such as autonomous driving. TTTech selected VxWorks to host several safety-related software components side by side with non-safety related components in the overall system architecture. The ECU is designed for use in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including autonomous driving and other automotive video camera--based vision applications. The ECU can be connected to multiple cameras and features deterministic Ethernet networking capabilities, including TTTech's TTEthernet switch technology supporting 100 Mbit/s as well as 1 Gbit/s.
