Sandfire Resources In Talks With Potential Copper Partners

Sandfire Resources NL (ASX:SFR) is in talks with Chinalco Mining Corporation International (SEHK:3668) and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (KOSE:A005930) to invest in projects or make acquisitions. Karl Simich, Chief Executive Officer of Sandfire Resources NL said, "Manufacturers and trading houses are among those seeking to assist the development of new copper assets to secure long-term supply. A South Korean entity involved in the talks told the Perth-based producer it planned to spend at least $2.5 billion in investments in copper projects. They are looking for long-term sustainability of their respective businesses, whether that’s electronics, construction, car manufacturing, copper-rod manufacturing." Discussions have also included LG Corp. (KOSE:A003550) and Yunnan Copper Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000878). Jiang Zhinan, a media official with Aluminum Corporation of China, which controls Chinalco Mining Corporation International and Yunnan Copper Co., Ltd., said the company could not immediately comment on the discussions. LG Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. didn’t immediately respond to e-mails requesting comment.

Chinalco Eyes Las Bambas Copper Project In Peru

Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco) has shown interest in acquiring the Las Bambas copper project in Peru, according to the local government. "We had a meeting with Chinalco’s senior executives and they expressed their interest in (acquiring) Las Bambas, as well as looking for new exploration sites," Jorge Merino Tafur, Peruvian energy and mines minister, said in a video released by local newspaper Gestión.
