Suntory Holdings Ltd. Reports Earnings Results for the First Half Year Ended June 2014; Provides Earnings Guidance for the Year 2014

Suntory Holdings Ltd. reported earnings results for the first half year ended June 2014. Suntory racked up record-high group sales of ¥1,108.9 billion in the first half of 2014, an increase of 18% from a year earlier, as a result of its acquisition of U.S. distiller Beam Inc. in May as well as the popularity of its Kinmugi low-priced beer-like drink product. Suntory's net profit tumbled 41.8% to ¥17.1 billion in the six-month period, largely due to costs associated with the acquisition. For the whole of 2014, Suntory is forecasting sales will rise 19.6% to ¥2.44 trillion.

Suntory Reportedly Seeks To Sell Tipness

Suntory Holdings Limited is looking to sell Tipness Limited for around $292 million to offset part of the cost of its $13.6 billion acquisition of Beam Inc earlier in 2014, people with direct knowledge of the matter said. NTT DOCOMO, Inc. (TSE:9437) and Nippon Television Holdings, Inc. (TSE:9404) have expressed interest in acquiring Tipness, the people familiar with ongoing negotiations said. The first round of bids is expected in early August 2014, according to the sources, who asked not to be named. Suntory and NTT DoCoMo declined to comment. No comment was immediately available from Nippon Television.

Suntory Holdings Announces Management Changes

Suntory Holdings Ltd., at a board meeting, informally appointed Lawson Inc. Chairman Takeshi Niinami as next president, effective Oct. 1. Current Suntory President and Chairman Nobutada Saji will remain as chairman with the right to represent the beverage and food company. Vice Presidents Shingo Torii and Shigehiro Aoyama will become vice chairman with representative rights on Oct. 1.
