Howard University Key Developments

Howard University Appoints Wayne A.I. Frederick as President

Howard University's board of trustees has named interim president Wayne A.I. Frederick, a cancer surgeon who holds three Howard degrees, as the school's 17th president. Frederick joined Howard's medical school faculty in 2006, and since 2011 had directed the university hospital's cancer center.

Howard Announces Executive Changes

At Howard, Addison Barry Rand will step aside as board chairman at the end of June 2014 after an eight-year run. So will the vice chairwoman, Renee Higginbotham-Brooks, after nine years in her position. Rand and Higginbotham-Brooks clashed last year over the financial condition and management of the private university in Washington, a prelude to the abrupt retirement of Howard President Sidney A. Ribeau in the fall. Stacey J. Mobley, a lawyer who has served as a trustee since 2005, will become chairman of the board, and businessman Robert L. Lumpkins (on the board since 1999) and businesswoman Benaree Pratt Wiley (on the board since 2009) will become vice chairs. Pratt Wiley is the sister of former D.C. mayor Sharon Pratt. A committee led by lawyer and longtime trustee Vernon E. Jordan Jr. is searching for a replacement for Ribeau.

Howard University Appoints Brian K. Jordan as New Police Chief and Executive Director for Safety and Security

Howard University has named Brian K. Jordan as the university's new police chief and executive director for safety and security. Jordan has 27 years of law enforcement experience with the District of Columbias Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). Jordan previously served as an MPD assistant police chief and in other executive leadership roles in the department. His experience ranges from operational and administrative aspects of policing, including patrol operations, internal and external investigations, managing organizational change and responding to and addressing homeland security threats.
