Hemispherx Announces Collaborations to Develop New Ebola Virus Disease Drugs
Oct 1 14
Hemispherx Biopharma, Inc. has announced new research collaborations designed to develop therapeutic cocktails against Ebola which may overcome the emergence of drug resistance due to Ebola virus mutation. The rapid acquisition of Ebola virus (EBOV) sequence variation has been recently demonstrated during genomic surveillance of the current Ebola virus disease (EVD). This observed genomic sequence variation suggests drugs that target specific viral non-variant protein sequences are at risk of mutation mediated activity failure. This complicates significantly the development of EBOV inhibitors in the drug development pipeline, some of which have been highly effective in treating advanced EVD in non-human primates. The five integrated Ebola-based collaborations are with, National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the US Army Research Institute in Infectious Disease (USAMRIID), the Swiss Department of Defense (Spiez Lab), research being conducted at Howard University, Washington, DC, and, a US based facility with biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) capabilities with whom a Sponsor Research Agreement is currently being negotiated.

Howard Announces Executive Changes
Jun 11 14
At Howard, Addison Barry Rand will step aside as board chairman at the end of June 2014 after an eight-year run. So will the vice chairwoman, Renee Higginbotham-Brooks, after nine years in her position. Rand and Higginbotham-Brooks clashed last year over the financial condition and management of the private university in Washington, a prelude to the abrupt retirement of Howard President Sidney A. Ribeau in the fall. Stacey J. Mobley, a lawyer who has served as a trustee since 2005, will become chairman of the board, and businessman Robert L. Lumpkins (on the board since 1999) and businesswoman Benaree Pratt Wiley (on the board since 2009) will become vice chairs. Pratt Wiley is the sister of former D.C. mayor Sharon Pratt. A committee led by lawyer and longtime trustee Vernon E. Jordan Jr. is searching for a replacement for Ribeau.
