Interuniversity MicroElectronics Center Key Developments

Imec and Lam Research Sign Collaborative Agreement to Expand R&D Partnership

Imec, which is engaged in research in nanoelectronics, and Lam Research have signed a collaborative agreement to expand their R&D partnership. The partnership will combine Lam's tools and imec's advanced integration capabilities to develop patterning and metallization solutions for next generation CMOS process technologies. "Lam Research has been a strategic partner in imec's research platform on advanced semiconductor process technologies for more than a decade.

imec and Lam Research Signs a Collaborative Agreement to Broaden Their R&D Partnership

The nanoelectronics research center imec and Lam Research signed a collaborative agreement to broaden their R&D partnership. The partnership will combine Lam's state-of-the-art tools and imec's advanced integration capabilities to develop patterning and metallization solutions for next generation CMOS process technologies. Developing the next technology node comes with ever more complexity, and imec's supplier hub aims at offering a neutral, open innovation R&D platform that involves suppliers more deeply and at an early stage of process step and module development. Suppliers joining imec's supplier hub concept have the ability to assess their tools on product stacks, develop process control and hardware/software options, and integrate new materials. For imec's partners, the increased involvement of the suppliers will ensure continued access to best-in-class infrastructure and novel materials for process step and module development on next-generation technologies.

InterDigital, Inc. and imec Sign Agreement to Develop Phased Array Technology

InterDigital, Inc. and imec have announced an agreement to develop 60 GHz millimeter wave, or mmW, radio and phased array technology for small cell backhaul and 5G wireless communications. The technology will enable easier deployments for small cell mobile backhaul resulting in lower cost solutions for high-speed data delivery. Imec will work with InterDigital's 5G research team to develop a high gain, wideband radio and phased array antenna with fast electrical steering in azimuth and elevation. This fourth generation of imec's phased array antenna technology will be combined with InterDigital's directional mesh backhaul and 5G access link technologies on InterDigital's mmW Hotspot Demonstration Platform. The platform is being designed for gigabit per second rates across small cell backhaul radio links. Existing mmW solutions for backhaul are fixed point-to-point, resulting in costly installation expenses for installers to align links, and capital expenditures for additional radios for each connection. InterDigital and imec will provide radio and phased array technologies to combine the high gain needed to close mmW links with the rapid beam steering that enables reliable and cost-effective mesh network small cell backhaul solutions.
