Swedish-PSBC Partnership Creates In-House Transfusion Service Labs

Swedish Health Services and Puget Sound Blood Center announced partnership that creates three new on-site transfusion service laboratories at Swedish Cherry Hill, First Hill and Issaquah campuses. The first lab opens at Cherry Hill on April 15. Under the partnership agreement Swedish will provide lab space, facilities, equipment and information technology systems. PSBC will provide transfusion laboratory services and regulatory oversight of staff, including a dedicated medical director, who will operate the lab 24/7 to test and match patient blood samples with on-site blood components. Blood transfusions are the most frequently performed medical procedure that people have during hospital stays.

Swedish Medical Center Announces Executive Changes

Swedish Health Services announced that it has named Anthony (Tony) A. Armada as its new Chief Executive Officer, beginning Nov. 1, 2013. Armada currently serves as President of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, an academic and research hospital that operates the only Level I trauma center in the northwest Chicago region. Armada succeeds Swedish Interim CEO Marcel Loh, who was named to his role in April 2013.

Chad Humphrey Files Suit Against Swedish Health Services on ER Billings

A lawsuit involving claims that uninsured emergency-room patients were overcharged by Swedish Health Services has been certified to proceed as a class action in King County Superior Court. The case was brought by Chad Humphrey, who was uninsured when he visited the emergency room at Swedish hospital in Issaquah twice in May 2012, and was charged a total of more than $10,000. The lawsuit contends that Humphrey was asked to pay gross charges, which amounted to significantly more than what a public or private insurance company would have paid. The suit claims that Swedish breached its contracts with uninsured patients and violated the Washington Consumer Protection Act. King County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ramsdell ordered that the case, Humphrey vs. Swedish Health Services, will proceed as a class action.
