University of Iowa names a Chicago consultant to lead U of I Hospitals and Clinics. Kenneth Kates, a health care consultant with Alvarez & Marsal in Chicago, becomes executive vice president and chief executive officer Sept. 15. Kates, 53, succeeds Donna Katen-Bahensky, who resigned Dec. 5 after leading the hospital since 2002. Kates has worked for Alvarez & Marsal since 2007 as a senior consultant for health care organizations, focusing on improving operations and financial performance, the U of I said. Before 2007, Kates spent nearly 20 years at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System, most recently as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Jean Robillard, M.D., University of Iowa vice president for medical affairs, announced the selection of Kenneth P. Kates as the new associate vice president and chief executive officer of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, pending approval by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. Kates is currently a consultant with Alvarez and Marsal in Chicago, Ill. He has more than 30 years of experience in academic health care, including numerous positions at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., and the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System, most recently as their executive vice president and chief operating officer. Kates will begin working at UI Hospitals and Clinics on Sept. 15.
