Akron Mayor Urges Akron General and Summa To Merge
Apr 2 14
Akron Mayor, Don Plusquellic urged his city's rivaling health systems, Akron General Health System and Summa Health System Inc to merge. Don Plusquellic is concerned that Akron’s hospital industry is turning into a battlefield, with larger, out-of-town health-care systems taking potential ownership interests in the local facilities. He does not want these outside interests coming into Akron. Summa Health System Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Strauss, said, "Health system had discussed the possibility of a more formal relationship with Akron General in the past, particularly before Summa went on the prowl for a minority investor. It was very clear from those discussions that despite both organizations' strong desire to provide care to the community, our models simply do not align." An Akron General spokesman said, “As the concept of a merger is not new, we have thoroughly considered it over the years and still believe that there are a number of economic and social reasons why a partnership between the two adult hospitals in Akron would raise concerns for our community.”
