Eminem's song publisher is suing Facebook and an ad agency in Detroit federal court, saying they appropriated one of the rapper's songs. In the complaint May 20, 2013, Ferndale, Mich.-based Eight Mile Style says a Facebook ad broadcast online last month copied music from Eminem's 2000 song "Under the Influence." The complaint says ad agency Wieden+Kennedy copied Eminem's music "in an effort to curry favor with Menlo Park, Calif.-based Facebook by catering to Zuckerberg's personal likes and interests, and/or to invoke the same irreverent theme" of the rapper's song.
Wieden & Kennedy, Inc. announced several key management appointments, including those of new co-executive creative directors. Colleen DeCourcy, founder of a New York social media company, and Mark Fitzloff, a 13-year W+K veteran, will serve as global co-executive creative directors. Also, W+K said Dave Luhr, global chief operations officer, will become agency president and co-founder Dan Wieden will become chairman of W+K's global management team, a newly created position. Joe Staples, another agency veteran, was promoted to executive creative director of W+K Portland. He replaces Fitzloff and will partner with Co-Executive Creative Director Susan Hoffman and Managing Director Tom Blessington. DeCourcy founded Socialistic, a social media content and design shop, in 2010. She was chief creative officer and chief executive officer. While at Socialistic she won the Red Bull and Fast Company accounts and led work for Showtime, Coke and General Electric. Fitzloff joined the agency in 1999 as a copywriter, working on the AltaVista, Nike and Coca-Cola accounts. As creative director on Old Spice he helped breathe new life into the dated American brand. In 2008, Fitzloff was appointed to the Portland management team as executive creative director. Luhr has been with the agency since 1986 and became managing director of the Portland office in 1992 and a partner shortly thereafter. Staples joined the W+K network in 2004, serving as a copywriter on the 2006 Nike World Cup campaign.
Iain Tait, who helped re-energize Wieden & Kennedy, Inc. with social media campaigns for Old Spice, is leaving the agency for a job at Google. Tait, who joined Wieden & Kennedy, Inc. in 2010 as the global executive interactive creative director and was named an agency partner in December, was away from the office.
