United Steelworkers Ratifies the Three-Year Collective Agreement with the University of Guelph
Sep 26 14
University of Guelph administrative and technical employees, members of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 4120 ratified a three-year collective agreement with the university. The new contract, covering 900 administrative and technical staff, was ratified by union members in voting. The pension agreement between USW Local 4120 and the University of Guelph follows a similar deal reached earlier this month between the University of Toronto and its technical and administrative staff, also represented by the USW. Options will include the creation of a Jointly Sponsored Pension Plan (JSPP) - a defined benefit plan in which employers and members share responsibility for plan governance and funding. Any reforms to the pension plan will have to be negotiated and approved by affected members.
United Steelworkers (USW) Local 4120 and University of Guelph Reach Tentative Deal
Sep 13 14
United Steelworkers (USW) Local 4120 reached a tentative agreement with the University of Guelph. The new deal includes an approach to ensure long-term pension sustainability. The agreement at the University of Guelph covers over 900 USW Local 4120 members and builds momentum to create a multi-employer, university-sector Jointly Sponsored Pension Plan (JSPP). The union and university acknowledge that the pension plan has solvency funding requirements and an ongoing deficit which, under current government regulations, represent a significant concern with regard to the financial stability of the plan.
