University of Louisville Hospital to Pay $2.8 Million Settlement Over Alleged Medicare Fraud

The University of Louisville Hospital has agreed to pay the federal government about $2.8 million to settle allegations that it submitted false claims for payment to the Medicare program. The voluntary settlement was announced by U.S. Attorney David Hale and the inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services. According to the settlement agreement, from 2006 through 2010, U of L's FirstCare program, which provides non-urgent care in the emergency room, employed nurse practitioners and physician assistants whose salaries and benefits were paid by Medicare. Over the same period, U of L emergency room physicians treated those staffers as their own employees, including collecting from Medicare for their services. In April 2011, attorneys for the U of L Hospital disclosed to the U.S. Attorney's Office that it may have violated federal law concerning the relationships it had with certain health care providers. This settlement agreement is neither an admission of liability by U of L Hospital nor a concession by the United States that its claims are not well-founded.

University of Louisville Hospital Need Time To Look For Buyer

University of Louisville Hospital will take a little longer than expected to seek a buyer. University Medical Center Inc. issued a request for proposals earlier in 2012, to seek a partner that could help the hospital to overcome financial challenges and make improvements. The deadline for searching was September 28, 2012, but officials released a statement on September 20, 2012, saying more time is needed to select a partner. A joint statement from Jim Taylor, President and Chief Executive Officer of University Medical Center and David L. Dunn, Executive Vice President for health affairs of University of Louisville Hospital, said, "We continue to have productive and meaningful dialogue with all the respondents and thank them for their dedication as we work through the technical details required in the negotiations. As the process moves forward, it has become clear that our discussions will likely move past this September and may conclude closer to the end of the year."
