Delaware State University Enters into Long-Term Lease for Sheraton Hotel; Announces Board Changes
Jun 14 13
Delaware State University plans to expand operations next month by taking over a large hotel and conference center in the city for student housing and office space. The DSU board of trustees voted to enter into a long-term lease of the Sheraton Hotel on North Dupont Highway. The hotel, which is situated on 6.5 acres, is located about a quarter-mile north of the main campus. Trustees voted unanimously to approve a $12 million, 15-year lease with the hotel. The lease agreement includes an option for the university to buy the property in two years. The university is expected to take over operation of the 135,000-square-foot hotel by the end of July. Several hundred students will live in the hotel beginning this fall. The university plans to upgrade existing dorms, which will include adding air conditioning and other amenities. The cost of upgrading the dorms, and the housing selected for that work, is still being assessed. Students will be shuttled between the hotel and the main campus. In addition to student housing, university officials expect to move some administrative offices to the Sheraton site. The hotel has 153 rooms, and the conference center has 15 meeting and banquet rooms. Next year, the new location might be the home of a new charter school. That decision would be up to the directors of the high school. The school is expected to open next year.
Former governor and congressman Mike Castle was announced as the newest member of the board. He was appointed to the six-year seat. Castle succeeds Calvin T. Wilson.
