California Academy of Sciences Announces Executive Changes

The California Academy of Sciences announced the election of Jerome C. Vascellaro as the new chair of its board of trustees. Vascellaro will begin his new role on July 1, 2014. Vascellaro has served on the Academy's board since 2009, most recently as co-chair of the Development Committee and a member of the Executive and Finance Committees. As board chair, Vascellaro will lead the Academy through one of the most exciting chapters in its long and illustrious history, as the institution expands its programs of public engagement, education, and scientific exploration and revolutionizes the way natural history museums address the global challenges of sustainability. Vascellaro succeeds John C. Atwater.

The California Academy of Sciences Appoints Dr. Jonathan Foley as Executive Director

The California Academy of Sciences announced the appointment of Jonathan Foley, Ph.D., as its new executive director. The Academy's Board of Trustees selected Dr. Foley to lead the Academy's efforts to explore and explain the natural world and address critical sustainability challenges. Foley is currently the director of the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota, where he is also a professor and McKnight Presidential Chair of Global Environment and Sustainability. He will begin his tenure at the Academy on August 18, 2014. Before joining the University of Minnesota in 2008, Foley spent 15 years on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin, where he founded the Climate, People and Environment Program and the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment.

California Academy of Sciences Names Margaret "Meg" Lowman as Chief of Science and Sustainability

Margaret "Meg" Lowman, a pioneering biologist who studies living systems high in forest treetops, has been named Margaret "Meg" Lowman has been named chief of science and sustainability, a new post at the California Academy of Sciences. Lowman's job will be to focus the research of academy scientists to the challenge of sustaining life on Earth. Lowman, 59, is widely known among biologists for developing advanced techniques to study the plants and animals that live primarily high up in forest canopies. Her research has moved her from simple ladders to wires to slingshot-fired ropes, to hot air balloons and cranes. Ultimately, she designed treetop walkways that have become public attractions in many forested areas of the world.
