National Retail Federation Launches Small Business Retail Council

The National Retail Federation announced the formation of the Small Business Retail Council to organize, recruit and engage Main Street merchants and independent community retailers in grassroots advocacy activities. The Council will represent and be responsive to the needs, concerns and interests of local shops and provide the association's small business members a forum to discuss the most pressing public policy issues and priorities. The Small Business Retail Council will consist of two co-chairs that will lead a five-to-seven member steering committee that will identify priorities, propose strategies and solutions, and participate in the coordination of grassroots advocacy. Membership on the Council will be comprised of independent retailers from around the country as well as small retailers that currently serve on the NRF Board of Directors, including Dave Ratner owner of Dave's Soda and Pet City of Agawam, Massachusetts and Beth Aberg, owner of Random Harvest Inc. of Washington, D.C.
National Retail Federation Revises Retails Sales Guidance for the Year 2014

National Retail Federation revised retails sales guidance for the year 2014. The company now expects retail sales will rise 3.6% in 2014 to $3.2 trillion, instead of its original prediction of 4.1% released in early February. The figures include sales in stores and online but exclude automotive sales and sales at gas stations and restaurants.
National Retail Federation Announces Executive Changes

National Retail Federation announced the hiring of Paul G. Martino as vice president and senior policy counsel, and the elevation of Beth Provenzano to vice president for Federal Government Relations. Martino and Provenzano will work with the NRF Government Relations Department and focus on emerging public policy priorities, including data security, payments, mobile and e-commerce, privacy and patent reform. Martino joins NRF from the Washington office of the national law firm Alston & Bird LLP, where he served as a partner and co-chair of the firm's Privacy and Data Security practice.
Provenzano has been with NRF since 2011.
