St. Louis Cardinals LLC is leading an investor group to acquire Memphis Redbirds Baseball, Inc. from a nonprofit group that controls Memphis Redbirds. The talks between the investor group and Memphis Redbirds are at advanced stages. The proposed deal is being brokered by Fundamental Advisors. Fundamental is the lender to the Redbirds stadium in Memphis. The city of Memphis is looking at the possibility of acquiring the stadium. The proceeds from that acquisition would be used to pay off Fundamental, people involved in the talks said. In a statement, Mayor A.C. Wharton Jr. stated that the city has been performing "due diligence as we reach a decision as to how the city can protect its interest and this critical asset." A purchase price has not been agreed on by the parties. Fundamental’s Chief Executive Officer Laurence Gottlieb said that his company expects to earn a profit on the deal.
