On July 1, Scott MacLean assumed his one-year term as chair of the Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society board of directors, replacing Willa Fields. Carol Steltenkamp became vice chair of the board, replacing Scott Holbrook. Beginning three-year terms this month, the Society's four new board members include: Beverly Bell, Elizabeth (Beth) Casey Halley, Rick Schooler and Michael H. Zaroukian. The following individuals began their two-year terms on the Nominating Committee: Linda Harrington, Tim Mooresenior and Barbara S. Riddell.
Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society Innovation Center Advances Interoperability

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald announced earlier on February 19, 2013 that the Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society will be leasing on the fourth level 12,500 square feet for its Innovation Center, a unique and dynamic testing, demonstration, exhibition, and educational facility, with another 12,500 square feet of exhibition space, of the newly-named Global Center for Health Innovation (formerly the Cleveland Medical Mart). HIMSS also plans to double the size of the exhibition space by 2016. The HIMSS Innovation Center will provide ongoing services for health delivery organizations and health IT companies, along with exhibitions, educational programming, and consumer-oriented applications. In addition, the year-round interoperability showcase and exhibition space will further validate functionality for new and developing products using standards and customized testing in both a physical and virtual demonstration environment. With its scenario-based setting, the HIMSS Health IT Ecosystem will provide a fully operational, multi-facility environment populated with simulated patient demographic, clinical and financial data. The health and healthcare communities will be able to plug into this environment and both test and demonstrate a specific product's interoperability capabilities.
Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society Announces Board Changes

Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has announced the promotion of Thomas M. Leary, MALA, CAE, FHIMSS to the position of Vice President, Government Relations, where he will lead HIMSS public policy initiatives and outreach to Congress and Federal agencies. The appointment is effective immediately. Leary had served as HIMSS Senior Director of Federal Affairs since 2003, directing HIMSS public policy activities with federal agencies, including analysis and response to federal regulatory requirements and leveraging HIMSS member subject matter expertise in health IT public policy development. Leary experience prior to joining HIMSS includes a position as Division Manager for Science Applications International Corporation's TRICARE Division, where he was engaged in the coordination of healthcare administrative outsourcing solutions for the Military Health System. He also held several roles at the Department of Defense, including as the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) and as the Special Assistant for Health Care Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (Legislative Affairs). Leary replaces Dave Roberts, who was elected to the San Diego Board of Supervisors and began his term early January 2013.
