Ornge Announces Return of its Sikorsky S76 Helicopters to Service
Jun 4 13
Ornge announced that it is returning its Sikorsky S76 helicopters to service. On May 31, the company voluntarily and temporarily took its five Sikorsky S76 helicopters offline out of an abundance of caution following a fatal accident involving an Ornge air ambulance helicopter in Moosonee. The company fixed wing aircraft, standing agreement carriers and local EMS services continued to be available to perform patient transports in this region. While the accident remains under investigation, preliminary information communicated to the company by the Transportation Safety Board did not raise concerns regarding the S76 fleet, and the company officials are confident they are safe to return to service. The S76 is flown out of bases in Thunder Bay and Kenora. Contingency plans to restore helicopter service in Moosonee are being developed. Further information will be communicated as it becomes available. Fixed wing aircraft will continue to be used for patient transport through the James Bay region during this time.
ORNGE Inc. Improves Patient Safety with New Helicopter Interiors
Jan 24 13
ORNGE Inc. is improving patient safety with a new interim interior for its fleet of AW139 helicopters that will allow paramedics to perform CPR at any time during flight. The interim interiors are currently being installed and will be in use by Feb. 2, 2013, giving Ornge time to develop a permanent solution. The interim interiors are similar to the medical interiors used in other AW139 emergency helicopters around the world. Some improvements include enhanced ability for paramedics to perform CPR on a patient at all times during flight; reduced risk of lines and tubes getting caught on equipment during loading and unloading; better access to the patient to place IVs; and improved access to medical bags and supplies. It is expected that the interim interior will be in place for about 18 to 24 months while a permanent solution is procured, designed, installed and tested.
