North Atlantic Industries to Provide Flight Control Systems for ARES Unmanned Demonstrator

North Atlantic Industries has been chosen by Lockheed Martin Skunk Works(R) to provide navigation system solutions for the Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System (ARES) vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) demonstrator. Vehicle management computer (VMC) and actuator interface unit (AIU) requirements were met utilizing NAI's Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) SIU6 chassis. Built on NAI's Custom-On-Standard Architecture(TM) (COSA(TM)) platform, the SIU6 chassis is populated with highly configurable PowerPC-based single board computer (SBC) and multi-function I/O 6U VME boards (64EP3 & 64C3). This provides a flexible system solution that allows Lockheed Martin to quickly mix and match functionality based on the ARES application demands. As part of the ARES navigation system, the SIU6 sensor interface unit enables Lockheed Martin to populate each board with function specific modules. This unique modular architecture offers a selection of up to 10 different or same functions from a broad assortment of low-power, high density modules. Functions include: programmable discretes, analog I/O (A/D, D/A & RTD), communications (RS-232/422/485 & ARINC-429), LVDT measurement, RVDT simulation and LVDT/RVDT AC Excitation. The SWaP-C efficient design increases packaging density, saves enclosure slots and reduces power consumption. In addition, the SIU6 incorporates automatic background Built-in-Test (BIT) testing that is always enabled and continually checks the health of each channel. Utilizing the 64EP3 6U VME single board computer with configurable multi-function I/O, combined with the U3 PowerPC Processor, ARES' VMC is triple redundant and controls actuators and various I/O for advanced autonomous flight control. The VMC also communicates with the AIU, which has redundancy by using two AIUs in the system.

North Atlantic Industries, Inc. has announced the availability of the 55RQ2, its new 3U, rugged cPCI power product. The 55RQ2 provides up to 300 watts of power with four outputs and is compliant with MIL-STD-704F. Other features include reverse polarity protection, current share, advanced programmability with BIT features, as well as a built-in EMI Filter compatible with MIL-STD-461 compliant systems. The 55RQ2 is PICMG 2.11 compliant and fits in a 3U cPCI, 0.8" pitch slot and is IPMB compatible. In addition the 55RQ2 is user configurable for power sequencing and ramp rates.

North Atlantic Industries, Inc. announced the availability of the integrated, compact, nano-sized subsystem with unprecedented I/O capabilities that connects to existing platform Ethernet networks, making data available to any system on the network. The Nano Interface Unit (NIU1) easily adds sensor data acquisition, distribution and communication interfaces to mission computers without expensive chassis and backplane redesign, for use in military and aerospace embedded applications. Leveraging NAI's field-proven, unique modular architecture, the NIU1 supports a wide selection of different Intelligent I/O, motion simulation/measurement and communications functions such as: A/D, D/A, TTL, RTD; Discrete I/O; Differential Transceiver, Synchro/Resolver/LVDT/RVDT Measurement, Simulation and Excitation; Strain Gage; Encoder; Dual Channel Dual Redundant BC/RT/MT MIL-STD-1553; high speed Sync/Async RS232/422/423/485; ARINC 429/575 and CANBus. This approach provides a simple integration effort for dedicated I/O interface capability to existing or new applications, targeting specific interfacing requirements and provides a complete I/O function subsystem. In addition, Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is standard on the NIU1 making it easy to integrate where 28 Vdc power isn't readily available. Pricing in quantity 100 of the NIU1-P8 configured with four high speed Sync/Async RS232/422/423/485 serial ports, 28Vdc input, Power-over-Ethernet and Dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports starts at $2,568 each.
