NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development Selects YMCA of Greater New York to Open New Branch in 'La Central' Development in the South Bronx

YMCA of Greater New York selected to open new branch in 'La Central' development in the South Bronx. 48,000 square foot facility part of public/private partnership selected by NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development to bring affordable housing and community resources to underserved neighborhood. The new YMCA will be part of a mixed use development to be known as 'La Central,' located in the Bronxchester urban renewal area bordered by Bergen and Brook Avenues and E. 149(th) and 153(rd) Streets. The new development will include five new buildings comprising a total of 985 low- and moderate-income affordable housing units, along with a host of new retail, community and recreation spaces. Phase I of the development will begin in 2015 and will include construction of the YMCA. The new Y will provide thousands of local families and children with need-based programs and services, create local jobs and bolster neighborhood small businesses, and bring volunteers, community leaders and donors to the area. The new branch's 48,000 square foot facility will feature a aquatics center, fitness studios, wellness center, and community spaces. The branch will offer a range of programs catering to all age groups, including: afterschool programs, summer camp, an diabetes prevention program, nutrition, fitness, teen leadership programs, college access and readiness, and more. This Y will have a strong focus on nutrition to help address the growing epidemics of type 2 diabetes and obesity in New York City and the South Bronx -- an area with a high prevalence for both these related and largely preventable conditions.

YMCA of Greater New York Opens Newest Branch in Coney Island

The YMCA of Greater New York will open its newest branch in the Coney Island. The newest branch from one of NYC's leading youth service providers, the Coney Island YMCA is a 44,000-square foot facility that features an aquatics center with a four-lane lap pool and family recreational pool, a full-court gymnasium, fitness and multi-purpose rooms, and more, all overlooking the neighborhood's historic boardwalk. As part of the new Coney Island Commons project, the new Y promises to be a center for community life and a shining example of the diversity of the newly revitalized Coney Island landscape.
