The director of palliative medicine at Dartmouth- Hitchcock Medical Center is leaving his job and heading west to Montana, where he plans to indulge in some fishing and spend time with his family. Ira Byock will leave his position at DHMC at the end of the month, the hospital announced.

Mayo Clinic, Inc. and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (D-H) announced a formal collaboration to bring the strengths of both organizations to the goal of improving health and health care quality while lowering overall costs. Under the agreement, D-H will become a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a growing network of like-minded organizations that share a commitment to serving patients and their families. Dartmouth-Hitchcock remains an independent entity under the agreement. As a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, D-H physicians and providers will have access to Mayo Clinic resources, including tools to promote physician-to-physician consultations and a point-of-care database of best-practice information on disease management, care guidelines, treatment recommendations and reference materials. In addition to their collaboration through the Mayo Clinic Care Network, Mayo and D-H are discussing a number of future joint projects, including advancing population health using large data systems, expanded clinical and basic research, joint educational initiatives and advancement of the science of health care delivery.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center announced that Dr. Denis Cortese, CEO emeritus of Mayo Clinic, and Laura Landy, president and CEO of the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation, have been appointed to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Board of Trustees. Dr. Cortese, who served as CEO of Mayo from 2003 through 2009, is Foundation Professor at Arizona State University (ASU), director of ASU's Health Care Delivery and Policy Program, and president of the non-profit Healthcare Transformation Institute, based in Phoenix, AZ. Dr. Cortese currently serves on the boards of directors for Cerner Corporation, Essence Global Holding Corporation and Pinnacle West. Ms. Landy's expertise in entrepreneurship and corporate venturing led her to create and direct the Institute for Nonprofit Entrepreneurship at NYU's Stern School of Business.
