DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH Key Developments

IAA Reportedly Eyes Stake In NATS

Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) plans to place a bid to acquire a stake in Britain's NATS Holdings Limited, The Sunday Business Post reported. The bid is understood to be at a preliminary stage. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH was earlier keen to acquire British government's 49% stake in NATS, but that sale process was abandoned by Chancellor George Osborne. DFS along with 3i Group plc and a number of pension funds are known to be interested in acquiring NATS once again. A 12% stake in NATS valued at around £1 billion is up for sale. Thomas Cook Group plc and TUI AG hold 12% stake in NATS and are seeking buyers for it. Another 12% stake in NATS is expected to be on the block. IAA is expected to bid for both theses stakes, a well-placed aviation source said. The source stated: "Consolidation in the European air traffic management sector is badly needed, and a genuine merger between the two air traffic management services would create a very strong player in terms of the overall European market." An industry source said: "If the IAA managed to obtain a significant stake in NATS, or if both sides were serious about merging the two companies into one single entity, there are potentially huge synergies. But for that to happen, IAA would need more than just a small equity holding and a seat on the board." The source added: "One way or another, it makes a lot of sense for the IAA to throw its hat in the ring on this, because if nothing else it gets to look at the books of NATS through the due diligence process."
