Bentley to Invest in New R&D Centre
Dec 5 14
Bentley has announced that it is to invest GBP 40 million (USD 62.7 million) in expanding its Crewe (United Kingdom) headquarters with a new research and development (R&D) facility. The new centre will measure over 45,000 square metres and feature a dedicated styling studio, R&D offices and a technical workshop. The facility will house 1,300 engineers, and is also expected to see the creation of 300 roles within engineering, manufacturing, quality, sales and marketing and project management. This investment will join the already heavy investment that is taking place at the site. Around GBP 800 million is being invested to prepare for the manufacture of a new sport utility vehicle (SUV) which is expected to add around 1,000 jobs. The investment underlines Bentley's importance within the Volkswagen (VW) Group as part of its luxury vehicle portfolio and the growth that it hopes to see in future. IHS Automotive registration figures show that Bentley's sales have grown to around 9,200 units, although with the addition of the new SUV and the replacement of the Continental GT, registrations will break through the 11,000 unit mark. The R&D investment could also help Bentley look towards further expanding its product portfolio in future as has already been mooted with the prospect of the Grand Convertible or entry-level model.
