East African Breweries Limited Key Developments

East African Breweries Limited Stops Daily Operations at Nairobi Plant

East African Breweries Limited has stopped daily operations at its Nairobi plant after the brewer posted the slowest first-half sales growth in four years. The company announced its Ruaraka plant is now running for five days a week —Monday through to Friday— as opposed to a seven-day operation because of the downturn in one of its top-selling products, the low-end Senator Keg beer. The 30% cut on operation days is aimed at cutting costs such as staff overtime pay, raw material orders and plant running expenses like electricity bills.

EAST Africa Breweries Limited Announces Earnings Results for the Full Year of 2013

EAST Africa Breweries Limited announced earnings results for the full year of 2013. The company's full year profit after tax dropped 38% to KES 6.9 billion attributed partly to higher financing costs and a challenging market in Uganda and Tanzania. The pre tax profit dropped 27% from KES 15.3 billion in 2012 to KES 11.1 billion in the year ended June 2013. According to the company, the plunge in profit was due to high interest costs on KES 19.5 billion loan it took to purchase 20% SABMiller stake in Kenya Breweries Limited. The financing cost of this loan only covered seven months in the prior year and a 12 months in the year under review, causing the big profit dent in 2013. Net sales increased by 6% from KES 55.5 billion to KES 59 billion.

East African Breweries Limited Announces Dividend for the Year Ended June 2013

East African Breweries Limited announced a dividend payout of KES 5.50 per share totaling KES 4.3 billion for the year ended June 2013 which is equivalent to 63% of the value of profit after tax for the period.
