Penguin to Pay $75 Million in Consumer Damages to Resolve All Antitrust Claims

Penguin has reached a comprehensive agreement with the US State Attorneys General and private class plaintiffs to pay $75 million in consumer damages plus costs and fees to resolve all antitrust claims relating to eBook pricing. Penguin has also committed to the State Attorneys General to abide by the same injunctive relief as previously agreed in a separate settlement with the Department of Justice.

Penguin Books Ltd. announced earnings results for the year 2012. For the year, total sales rose to £1.05 billion, up 1% from the previous year, although operating profit declined 12%, to £98 million. Figures benefited slightly from currency exchange fluctuations.

Penguin Settles Lawsuit on Pricing of e-books

Penguin announced that it was settling a lawsuit brought by the Justice Department over the pricing of e-books. The company said it was agreeing to settle because of the impending merger of Random House, a division of Bertelsmann, and Penguin, a division of Pearson.
