Plastic Logic Enters into Development Partnership with PrintLess Plans
Nov 19 13
Plastic Logic has entered into a development partnership with PrintLess Plans to produce the Zephyr E-portfolio, a touch-sensitive display for plans for on-site use by the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. Plastic Logic and PrintLess Plans have worked together to develop a medium format flexible display for use on-and-off site by the AEC industry. PrintLess Plans selected Plastic Logic's display technology as the best suited to the application. A working prototype will be shown at GreenBuild International Conference and Expo, Philadelphia, November 20- 22. Previous attempts to replace hard copy plans on construction sites have largely failed due to the challenges of making a sufficiently large display which is robust, lightweight, low power and can be folded or rolled up. Plastic Logic's electrophoretic display (EPD) meets these criteria. The technology is unbreakable, flexible, daylight-readable, lightweight and only uses power to update the image. The EPD offering combines Plastic Logic's unique flexible OTFT backplane with technology from E ink(TM), the market leader for flexible EPD materials.
popSLATE Partners with Plastic Logic to Create the Always-on Second Screen Display for their Apple iPhone 5 & 5S Accessory
Sep 13 13
Plastic Logic has entered into an exclusive strategic partnership with popSLATE for their new Apple iPhone Always-On 4 second screen display. Plastic Logic and popSLATE announced that, following a joint development programme, the first product will be an accessory for the Apple iPhone 5 and 5S, incorporating a secondary electrophoretic display (EPD) from Plastic Logic. One of the product's key features is the display: daylight readable, shatterproof, ultra-thin and ultra-lightweight. EPD technology is 'always-on' in the sense that an image is retained and power only required to write a new image. Plastic Logic's market leading flexible EPD technology combines their unique plastic OTFT backplane with reflective frontplane technology from E Ink(TM). These benefits mean this technology is ideally suited to applications such as the high growth market for smart mobile accessories. popSLATE has pioneered the smartphone Always-On Experience by embedding Plastic Logic's EPD display into the phone case. In combination with the popSLATE app, users can customise their case with the images they love, create dashboards with the information they need, and use their favourite apps in an entirely new, at-a-glance, context-aware manner. popSLATE is also working with leading artists to create dynamic content channels, so users can 'pop' a myriad of stunning images to the backs of their phones.
SERELEC and Plastic Logic to Introduce ZED - a Low-Power Outdoor Digital Signage Solution
Jan 28 13
SERELEC S.A.S and Plastic Logic Ltd. have collaborated to develop an innovative, low-power outdoor digital signage solution based on Plastic Logic's flexible plastic displays. The ZED (Zero Energy Display) will be unveiled on the Plastic Logic booth (number 8-F195) at the Integrated Systems Europe Show (ISE 2013) in Amsterdam from 29 to 31 January 2013. Each ZED unit consists of a pair of Plastic Logic's tiled display modules integrated in a slim metal housing, specifically created for the application. These "two-up" modules consist of two 10.7" monochrome flexible plastic displays, which have been seamlessly tiled together to create a larger flexible display (15.4" diagonal) with 150 dpi at a fraction of the weight of standard glass-based displays (merely 115g). The finished unit measures less than one cm in thickness and is rated IP54. It also contains a temperature regulator, resulting in an increased unit operational range from -15degC to +50degC. The integration of a front-light is optional. The unit is fully compliant with public and transport standards. The inherent bi-stability of Plastic Logic's displays (the image is maintained even when there is no power) has enabled the ZED units to be designed with very low power consumption. As such, they can be completely solar-powered. Furthermore, because the displays are reflective, they can not only be ready in any lighting conditions, including bright sunlight, but also from almost any angle - just like the paper they will be replacing in a large number of cases. The very first ZED units will ship during the second quarter of 2013. Initial applications will include signage for public transportation (electronic timetables at bus-stops and tram-stops as well as in underground stations) and large-area advertising, both indoors and out (mounted on the exterior of trams and buses, for example). The content can be updated wirelessly (3G, GPRS etc.) using the integrated connection. Future applications will include colour displays, further increasing the potential for usage.
