Strathclyde University Appoints Lord Smith of Kelvin as its New Chancellor

Strathclyde University has announced the appointment of Lord Smith of Kelvin as its new chancellor. Lord Smith is one of Scotland's prime business figures and chairs the organising committee for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Lord Smith, who described his appointment as an honour, is chairman of SSE, the Weir Group and the UK Green Investment Bank. He is also a non-executive director of Standard Bank Group South Africa.

Cuillin Medical Ltd. and University of Strathclyde Sign Agreement to Commercialize Cardiology IP Portfolio

Cuillin Medical Ltd. has been appointed by the University of Strathclyde to commercialise IP it has developed over a number of years in the area of coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is one of the top 5 causes of death in developed countries and is a major cause of spiralling health care costs. Key focus will be placed on the drug-eluting stent market which accounts for half of the global stent market and is claiming market share from the original bare metal stent sector. The current global stent market is worth approx. GBP 4.4 billion per annum and is predicted to grow to GBP 5.4 billion by 2016. Cuillin Medical will develop the technology and engage with collaborators around the world. The company intends to work closely with the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Biomedical engineering at the University of Strathclyde as a part of the Health Technologies at Strathclyde initiative to address the world-wide need for earlier and more accurate disease detection and better treatments – as well as disease prevention throughout life.
