Voltage Security, Inc. Introduces Voltage SecureData Suite for Sensitive Data in Hadoop

Voltage Security(R), announced Voltage SecureData(TM) Suite for Hadoop, a new solution protecting sensitive data in Hadoop installations with industry standard, next-generation Voltage Format-Preserving Encryption(TM) (FPE) and Secure Stateless Tokenization(TM) (SST) technologies. The company will feature the Voltage SecureData(TM) Suite for Hadoop at Strata Hadoop World, Oct. 15-17 in New York. Apache Hadoop is designed to enable very rapid time-to-insight, decision support, and operational efficiencies. But Hadoop poses many security and regulatory compliance challenges, including automatic replication of data across multiple nodes, multiple types of data concentrated in the Hadoop 'Data Lake,' and access by many different users with varying analytic needs. Sensitive data such as credit cards, social security numbers, bank statements, health records, etc., flows into Hadoop, which becomes an especially attractive target for cyber-attackers. Traditional IT security controls cannot fully protect an organization from data breaches and data leakage. Storage-level or HDFS encryption protects against unauthorized personnel who may have physically obtained the disk, from being able to read any data from it. This is a useful control in a Hadoop cluster due to frequent disk swap-outs, but does nothing to protect the data from access when the disk is running. And data masking obfuscates sensitive data, but is intended to be irreversible, which limits its value for many analytic applications. The data-centric security approach calls for de-identifying the data as close to its source as possible, transforming the sensitive data elements with usable, yet de-identified, equivalents that retain their format, behavior and meaning. This protected form of the data can then be used in subsequent applications, analytic engines, data transfers and data stores, while being readily and securely re-identified for those specific applications and users that require it. With the Voltage SecureData Suite for Hadoop, Voltage Security provides maximum data-centric protection and offers broad platform and application support -- inside and outside Hadoop -- with high performance and high scalability well-matched with Hadoop speeds. Consisting of software, support and services, the Voltage SecureData Suite for Hadoop is available in two pre-configured packages: the Starter Edition to get started protecting sensitive data for pilot projects and small deployments, and the Enterprise Edition with full production-level implementations. Each package includes an unlimited number of applications running directly on Hadoop or used by an ETL or batch process transferring directly into or out of Hadoop. Protection for additional Hadoop nodes can be added to either package to meet the exact data protection needs for Hadoop environments. GrayRobinson, P.A. litigated a database encryption patent on behalf of Protegrity Corp. against Voltage Security, Inc. After the first week of the patent infringement jury trial in Hartford, Connecticut, Voltage Security settled by purchasing a license to Protegrity's database encryption patent. GrayRobinson's trial team was led by equity partners, Stefan V. Stein and Woodrow Pollack and assisted by associate Kristin Shusko.

Payment Processors and Device Manufacturers Embrace Voltage Security(TM) Point-to-Point Encryption

Voltage Security announced that Uniform Industrial Corporation now supports Voltage Format-Preserving Encryption(TM) (FPE), a powerful component of Voltage SecureData Payments(TM) with Voltage Identity-Based Encryption(TM) (IBE), providing merchants with P2PE (point-to-point encryption), otherwise known as end-to-end encryption, from a payment reading device to a trusted processing host. This expands a previous partnership with Heartland Payment Systems in which UIC and Voltage provided end-to-end encryption for Heartland's E3(TM) security solutions, delivering reliable, secure terminal-based communications with billions of transactions on hundreds of thousands of merchant locations across global deployments. UIC is now offering Voltage SecureData Payments with Voltage Format-Preserving Encryption to users of its devices of the MSR215E and MSR215T secure MSR readers, and PP790SE and PP795SE All-in-one PIN Pads, as well as the TS890 and TS900 payment terminals. By strongly encrypting cardholder data at the read head, using tamper-resistant and tamper-evident payment devices, any malware installed on the intermediate POS systems would only have access to the cipher text, while the keys necessary to decrypt it stay safely inside the most secure PCI environments at the decryption endpoint. The cipher text, using Voltage Format-Preserving Encryption (FPE), can be used by those POS systems, just as the original plaintext was; but, it is useless to any attackers.
