Christchurch City Council is considering a sell down of strategic assets as "a very last resort". The council has begun talking to ratepayers about options to reduce the $800 million to $900 million funding shortfall it is facing.

Christchurch City Council has appointed Cameron Partners Ltd to review the commercial assets of Christchurch City Holdings Limited. “The review will provide detailed information on funding options for the city's anchor projects, and how best to manage our assets in order to both meet the city’s strategic objectives and to provide the best financial return,” said Cr Raf Manji, the chair of the Christchurch City Council’s finance committee. A Christchurch-based merchant banker, Justin Murray, believes it's highly likely the review will advise the council to sell some of its assets."There will be a process of comparing the future returns that could be generated from these assets," he says, "versus the value that may be able to be realised from a selldown or a 100% sale."

Christchurch City Council accepted the resignation of its CEO Tony Marryatt, effective from November 30, 2013. Mr. Marryatt has been on special leave pending the results of an independent investigation into any actions or omissions by him that may have led to the revocation of the Council's accreditation as a Building Control Authority.
