Joost Hiltermann has been named as chief operating officer of International Crisis Group (The). As the number two executive for the independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, Hiltermann is responsible for the oversight and management of its programs and operations around the world. He also leads the organization's strategic planning process. At University of California - Santa Cruz, Hiltermann worked with professors Paul Lubeck and Wally Goldfrank in sociology, and Terry Burke in history. For the past five years he was based in Amman, Jordan, as deputy director for Middle East and North Africa where he managed a team of analysts to conduct research and write policy-focused reports on factors that increase the risk of and drive armed conflict.
