Canada Revenue Agency Appoints Richard Thorpe as Chair to its Board of Management

Canada Revenue Agency announced the appointment of Richard Thorpe as chair of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Board of Management for a four-year term. Mr. Thorpe is a former member of the British Columbia Legislative Assembly with a portfolio that included various business and tax issues. He has served on the CRA Board of Management since December 2011. The Board of Management consists of 15 members appointed by the Governor in Council. Board members bring an external and diverse business perspective in overseeing the organization and management of the CRA. The Board's responsibilities include the development of the Corporate Business Plan and the management of policies related to resources, services, property, personnel, and contracts.

Canada Revenue Agency to Eliminate 600 Jobs in Capital Region

Canada Revenue Agency expects to eliminate 600 jobs in the nation's capital as the tax agency implements the Conservative's latest budget cuts to save $60.6 million on internal operations by 2015. The first wave of the cuts were announced this week, hitting more than 300 positions at headquarters or at Ontario regional operations in Ottawa, and employees are braced for another round by the fall. There are about 10,000 CRA employees in 29 locations across the National Capital Region. Most of the cuts will be at headquarters but putting the international tax office and the tax service office under single management will also eliminate jobs, including some 23 executive positions. The next round of cuts is expected to come from reorganizing several branches, savings in overhead and consolidating internal support services. In a notice to employees, CRA Commissioner Andrew Treusch announced he expected 70% of the reductions could be managed by attrition, noting that between 500 to 600 employees in the NCR leave or retire every year.
