Sony Pictures Entertainment and Starz announced a new, multi-year agreement that extends their exclusive first-run output premium pay TV deal. As a result, Starz will have the exclusive pay television rights to Sony Pictures' theatrical releases through 2021. The previous agreement between the two companies had covered motion pictures released theatrically through 2016. Commencing with 2005 theatrical releases, Starz has been the exclusive first-run pay television home for the exhibition of Sony Pictures' films including titles from Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, TriStar, and Screen Gems. The new SPE-Starz agreement provides movie content for all Starz platforms including its linear STARZ and ENCORE channels in standard definition and HD, subscription VOD services in standard definition, HD On Demand and 3D On Demand, and online streaming services, including the recently launched STARZ PLAY and ENCORE PLAY. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Starz remains the exclusive home of Disney theatrical releases, including its Lucasfilm, Marvel and Pixar releases, and their accompanying digital streaming rights, into 2017.
A stunt woman has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles against Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. after she was injured in a stunt on the set of FX drama 'Justified'. Lisa Hoyle filed the suit on February 1, 2013 in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging she was injured February 3, 2011, when a parked car she was standing next to was hit by another car for a stunt she was unaware was being staged. The car she was next to rolled over her ankle and knocked her unconscious. Hoyle said the stunt crew had been informed of the stunt during a safety meeting, but she was getting food and didn't hear the message about the planned crash. She said she was injured because of poor set management and negligence by Sony. The amount in damages Hoyle seeks was not reported.
Kazuo Hirai of Sony Corporation denied the rumors about a potential sale of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. Hirai said, "There is absolutely no truth to rumors that Sony's entertainment businesses are for sale. As I said at our strategy meeting in April, Sony is comprised of electronics, entertainment and financial services businesses, and our entertainment companies have a stable business foundation and are poised for future growth. There is no reason to sell these industry-leading businesses and no consideration is being given to the idea."
