Google Picks Alcon to Manufacture Smart Contact Lenses

Alcon, the eye care division of Novartis, has agreed to license the technology Google has been working on and apply non-invasive sensors, microchips and other miniaturized electronics to a pair of smart contact products. The first product is the one all heard about already, where glucose levels are monitored through teardrops in the eye and reported to a smartphone. The second product is geared at helping farsighted users see better by restoring the eye’s natural ability to focus. These aren’t expected to be features that exist within the same contact lens just yet, but individually these lenses serve to dramatically improve the quality of life for their owners.

Alcon Opens Eye-Care Drug Manufacturing Plant

Alcon officially opened its first Asia-Pacific eye-care drug manufacturing plant here, a facility housing production, packaging and distribution under one roof. The $200 million plant, which started commercial operations last July, spans 330,000 sq ft of space in Tuas Biomedical Park. It is equipped with high-speed aseptic filling capabilities to produce 25 million bottles of drugs annually, making it the only site here that makes sterile finished products in such large volumes.

Alcon Launches Cataract Refractive Suite

Alcon has launched the Cataract Refractive Suite. The Cataract Refractive Suite by Alcon is reportedly designed to improve the cataract surgical procedure through optimized surgical planning and execution. The Cataract Refractive Suite by Alcon is comprised of multiple innovations and advanced technologies from Alcon's extensive surgical device portfolio. The suite facilitates eye surgeons to better plan for, and performs, some of the most challenging steps of cataract surgery with automation and precision, while helping to meet the current unmet need of improving the refractive outcomes of cataract patients. The Cataract Refractive Suite by Alcon surrounds the surgeon with 'best-in-class' innovations, which are designed to assist eye surgeons to achieve refractive cataract surgical outcomes through improved surgical planning utilizing pre-operative diagnostic information and through improved execution of the cataract procedure steps: The new VERION Image Guided System, comprised of the VERION Reference Unit and the VERION Digital Marker, is an advanced surgical planning, imaging and guidance technology designed to provide greater accuracy and efficiency during cataract surgery. It allows eye surgeons to capture a high-resolution, diagnostic reference image of the patient's eye pre-operatively, quickly determine an optimized surgical plan that enables surgeons to see all incisions and alignment in real-time, and integrate the surgical plan into the operating room (OR) utilizing a tracking overlay. The LenSx Laser with the SoftFit Patient Interface allows eye surgeons to utilize the precision of a femtosecond laser to perform the most challenging manual steps of cataract surgery through an image-guided, reproducible laser treatment. This includes lens fragmentation, corneal incisions, and creating an opening within the eye so that the surgeon can access and remove the cloudy, natural lens (called a capsulotomy). The new CENTURION Vision System improves upon Alcon's history of innovation in phacoemulsification technology, offering eye surgeons capabilities for cataract surgical removal and lens replacement. The system automatically and continuously adapts to changing conditions within the eye, provides anterior chamber stability during each step of the procedure, and places optimized energy technology into the surgeon's hand-piece through Balanced Energy Technology. The family of LuxOR Surgical Microscopes provides superior visualization during cataract surgery by delivering greater depth of focus and improved red reflex stability through its proprietary ILLUMIN-i technology. Additionally, it integrates with the VERION Image Guided System, allowing for overlays of key information needed by the eye surgeon to optimize the surgical procedure.
