Swinburne University of Technology Key Developments

Swinburne University Seeks To Sell Lilydale Campus

Swinburne University of Technology seeks to sell Swinburne Lilydale campus. Swinburne spokesman Andrew Dempster said the university was planning to undertake the campaign for the Lilydale site during late February 2014, "to provide all parties with an opportunity to participate in the divestment process"."The campaign will be undertaken in a transparent way and Swinburne is committed to ensuring all probity and government land-monitor requirements are met," Dempster said. The site is zoned for education, and any change would have to be approved by the State Government. It follows months of negotiations between the university, Government, and Yarra Ranges Council, who had announced plans to move to the site and create a civic centre, but no agreement had ever been reached. Rachel White, a spokeswoman for Higher Education Minister Peter Hall, said the Government would work with Swinburne to ensure there was an educational benefit for Lilydale regarding any plans for the site. "Nothing can happen until Swinburne disposes of the land," Dobson said. "What happens next is the most important thing. There must be education at the site. No education at all is the worst case scenario, or something so small it wouldn't be viable."

National Tertiary Education Union Starts Proceedings Against Swinburne University of Technology; Sheds More Than 240 Jobs and Closes Lilydale and Prahran Campuses

Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne is being sued for failing to properly consult staff and unions before it announced job cuts in 2012. The National Tertiary Education Union started proceedings against Swinburne in the Federal Court. The union's Victorian secretary, Colin Long, reported that the university must pay for failing to negotiate over such a big announcement.
