A newly introduced SKF sensor bearing equipped with an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) filter offers ideal protection against potential damage to the bearing s sensitive electronics from power surges or electric discharges, most notably in AC electric motor applications. The EMC filter is integrated in-line with the sensor bearing s cable to protect the Hall sensor and other electronics used in the bearing and ultimately can help improve bearing reliability and service life. The new sensor bearing with EMC filter is one in a growing family of compact SKF sensor bearing solutions providing a variety of monitoring capabilities for applications across many industries. SKF USA Inc. announced that as stand-alone unit or integrated into control system, SKF Machine Tool Observer MTx connects all operating-parameter sensors to actively monitor, observe, and log performance history of machine tool spindles, grinding machines, or other rotating equipment. Accumulated condition levels, with continuous recording and long-term storage of critical data, allow intelligent monitoring. MCU-based electronics assembly with internal memory can connect to up to 6 different types of various sensors for monitoring multiple parameters. The new SKF Machine Tool Observer MTx serves as a single device connecting all operating-parameter sensors to actively monitor, observe, and log the performance history of machine tool spindles, grinding machines, or other rotating equipment. This flexible solution collects information about the accumulated condition levels of a machine tool via the connected sensors to provide intelligent monitoring with continuous recording and long-term storage of critical operating data. The MTx can be used as a stand-alone unit or integrated into a control system, whether for OEM or end-user applications. The technology ultimately supports preventive maintenance objectives by helping to detect operating abnormalities before they can escalate. The system consists of a microcontroller-based electronics assembly with internal memory for data storage in real time. The electronics assembly can be connected to up to six different sensor types for monitoring vibration, speed, temperature, humidity, eddy probes, and oil streak, among other parameters. It supports a wide range of different types of sensors, where a maximum of 14 of these sensor types can be connected at the same time. The system compiles detailed documentation of machine tool history and working conditions and enables traceability of incidents by accurately logging their duration, date, and time.

SKF USA Inc. and Vantage Drilling Inc. have combined resources to improve the reliability of the Vantage Titanium Explorer and Platinum Explorer drill ship fleet. These vessels are designed for operation in the deepest waters of the Gulf of Mexico and other offshore global basins of oil & gas exploration. Based on SKF’s expertise in the application of condition monitoring systems and Vantage’s philosophy of improving the mechanical reliability of its drilling ships, these ships will be equipped with a comprehensive monitoring system for the propulsion and positioning thrusters. SKF undertook a careful study of the thruster mechanical system, including bearings, lubrication, gearboxes and drive motors to design a condition monitoring solution, supported by remote diagnostics services that will provide Vantage with timely information about the mechanical health of their thrusters along with advanced warning of issues that could impact drilling or propulsion system operation. Application of this system coupled with the remote diagnostics services provided by SKF will enable Vantage to comply with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) guidelines for Condition Based Maintenance procedures. Through the application of these systems and processes, Vantage will now be able to extend the mandatory overall interval required for physical inspection of the thrusters until the operational condition of the asset requires it. This will create a major cost savings over the life of the asset and contribute to significant improvements in operational utilization of the drill ships.
