Carillion and Telent Bag £500 Million BT Broadband Cabling Deal

Carillion plc announced that a Carillion joint venture has bagged a £500 million deal to deliver broadband cabling across the UK for BT. The contract, won with Telent in a 60:40 joint venture, will run for three and a half years and cover 33 local authority regions, with a particular focus on connecting rural communities to super fast broadband. Carillion will deliver civil engineering, cabling, poling and other infrastructure services.
telent Ltd. Receives Contract from Network Rail to Design, Supply and Install a New SCADA

telent Ltd. has received a contract from Network Rail to design, supply and install a new SCADA, or supervisory control and data acquisition, system, which will reportedly control traction power and distribution across the national network. The fully integrated system will include full voice and data communications that will operate over Network Rail's fixed transmission network system. The new system will provide the complete control interface for the power network operators, enabling Network Rail to carry out isolations, provide HV phase synchronization and implement automatic execution and service restoration. The system will also provide maintenance information and training and replay modes to support migration from the existing systems. In the South East of England telent will also be responsible for the replacement of the existing electromechanical trackside control equipment on the third rail dc system. The project will run until 2017, during which there will be a phased migration programme to transfer existing controls from the current sixteen separate systems at thirteen control locations, to the new national integrated system to be controlled from Network Rail's own Rail Operating Centres. The electrification schemes that are due to be completed during this time will also need to be integrated. The whole system is an essential part of the planned electrification investment being made in the UK Rail network and will deliver flexibility to accommodate future changes to the electrified network.
telent wins RETB contract from Network Rail Scotland

telent has won the radio electronic token block, or RETB, contract for Scotland's Far North and West Highland lines from Network Rail to deliver a replacement radio infrastructure. This is to accommodate reallocation of the existing radio frequencies to allow changes to European TV, and allow operational enhancements to the signalling operation. The next generation RETB system will be implemented on the rural single track lines from Glasgow to Oban via Fort William and from Inverness to the North Coast of Scotland at Thurso. The project reportedly includes the replacement of radio base station equipment at 46 sites and radio units on over 100 trains, including 5 steam locomotives, and must be completed to allow the existing radio frequencies to be reallocated in December 2015. A key feature of telent's approach is the migration solution. It is essential that both the existing system and the new system operate in parallel to allow uninterrupted service during the transition phase. Part of the work will be on one of Network Rail's high installations, White Corries, 3,563 ft above sea level, where some parts of the mountain range are only accessible by either helicopter or track mounted Land Rovers, telent added. As the Principal Contractor telent will coordinate all aspects of the work, including the initial trial to prove system performance and leading to product acceptance and system safety case approval.
