TopCoder, Inc. Key Developments

TopCoder, Inc. Gives Developers Place to Test Their Skills with New Services Powered by Amazon Web Services

TopCoder, Inc. announced the launch of a series of innovation challenges for the new AWS service AppStream. AppStream provides developers with a dynamic way to stream entire applications, or their components, to a device. In an effort to identify the best scenarios for taking advantage of this type of application streaming as a service capability, TopCoder will run a series of challenges to gather the best ideas from the TopCoder community for how to use AppStream, and then will run subsequent challenges to prototype popular ideas. AppStream's streaming capabilities allow graphically and resource-intensive applications to run on low-performing devices. This enables developers to reach new end-users without having to constrain the design of an application to specific devices. Because the application is processed in the cloud, as opposed to on the device, it can port across platforms and helps protect the code from piracy. Developers can write software once and run it via AppStream to instantly and securely deliver the experience to computers, tablets, phones, and televisions with an Internet connection. The idea and development contests are available at topcoder.com/aws. The idea contest will crowdsource compelling new use cases for AppStream from a global community of developers and designers. For registered AppStream preview participants, there will be follow-on contests to prototype a select number of use cases that result from the idea content.

TopCoder's Platform Upgrade Allows for Creation of More Valuable and Efficient Big Data Solutions

TopCoder, Inc. has upgraded its platform to more efficiently deliver valuable solutions to clients. Greatly expanded support for programming languages, improved scale and concurrency, and increased big data capability allow TopCoder's community of nearly a half million people worldwide to produce superior, more expressive code for real-world, big data problems. Through open innovation and crowdsourcing, TopCoder regularly hosts marathon match competitions that solve large, complex, algorithmic problems for clients. For example, Harvard Medical School ran a TopCoder competition focused on DNA sequencing alignment. The existing gold standard to calculate an accurate edit distance between a query DNA string and the original DNA string in 400 seconds took a full year to develop. TopCoder delivered solutions in two weeks and the winning algorithm runs in 12 seconds at an increased accuracy level. The delivery time alone was 96.2% faster than a traditional avenue could produce.

TopCoder, Inc. Announces Launch of New Predictive Algorithm Competition to Support Tech Challenge for Atrocity Prevention

TopCoder, Inc. announced the launch of a new predictive algorithm competition to support the Tech Challenge for Atrocity Prevention, an innovative approach to developing new ways to combat and prevent the worst human rights violations including genocide, mass rape and ethnic cleansing. Partnering with the U.S. Agency for International Development and Humanity United, TopCoder is hosting a series of competitions including data discovery, data validation, algorithm development and algorithm dashboard assembly as part of the Model Challenge, which will seek predictive analytic models that can help identify community-level risk factors that make communities more or less likely to experience acts of violence. The first phase of this computational model build is the data discovery challenge, where competitors need to find and describe a freely available and clearly documented data set measuring any social, economic, or physical value which has the potential to contain statistical indicators for the occurrence of an atrocity. The data set can contain observations of one value or of several related values and may have been collected from one geographical area or from multiple areas.
