The Center for Democracy and Technology Names Nuala O'Connor as President and CEO, Effective January 21, 2014

The Center for Democracy and Technology's (CDT) Board of Directors announced that Nuala O'Connor has been named President and CEO, effective January 21, 2014. O'Connor will succeed Leslie Harris, who is stepping down after leading CDT for nearly nine years. O'Connor is an internationally recognized expert in technology policy, particularly in the areas of privacy and information governance. O'Connor comes to CDT from Amazon.com, where she served both as Vice President of Compliance and Customer Trust and as Associate General Counsel for Privacy and Data Protection. Previously she served as the first Chief Privacy Officer at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Center for Democracy & Technology Promotes Emma Llanso to Director of its Free Expression Project

The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) has promoted Emma Llanso to Director of its Free Expression Project. Llanso, who previously served as Policy Counsel at CDT, has been active on CDT's free expression and Global Internet Policy & Human Rights projects, where she has focused on the issues of First Amendment law, international free expression, internet governance, and children's privacy and safety online.

Center for Democracy & Technology Selects Matthew Shears to Direct its Project on Global Internet Policy and Human Rights

Center for Democracy & Technology has selected Matthew Shears to direct CDT's project on Global Internet Policy and Human Rights. Shears, who has been working with CDT on Internet governance and international policy issues, assumed his role on May 1, 2013. Shears, a UK national, has extensive experience in the Internet and telecommunications policy space, working for the United States Mission to the European Union, AT&T, the broadband satellite start-up Teledesic and Cisco Systems. He was the Internet Society's first Policy Director, representing the organization during the Tunis phase of the World Summit on the Information Society, ITU Telecomm and the Internet Governance Forum.
