The Cleantech Open Announces Board Appointments

The Cleantech Open has appointed six experts to its board of directors to support and direct the organization's accelerating global expansion. The new board members represent a wide diversity of skills and expertise in the cleantech sector, and include successful cleantech entrepreneurs, a former Department of Energy policy advisor, the owner of a large-scale PV solar engineering firm, and the founder of a leading cleantech venture capital firm. The six new board members appointed are: James Butler. James has 15 years' experience commercializing engineered technologies for the industrial and civil infrastructure markets and a former participating entrepreneur in the Cleantech Open Accelerator program. As co-founder and CEO of HJ3, a technology transfer from the University of Arizona, James launched several composite products that have been recognized worldwide, including StrongHold(TM) for basement repairs, BlastSeal(TM) for blast mitigation, CarbonSeal(TM) for repairing pressure pipe and gas transmission lines, and HJ3 Civil(TM) for repairing bridges, water/waste-water pipe, and commercial buildings. A successful inventor of high-strength composites, James is named on one issued patent and four patents pending.Timothy L. Hoffman. Tim Hoffman has 19 years' experience providing consulting and investment banking services to a wide range of clients. Tim is currently a managing director at Green Owl Advisers, a consulting firm that provides financial and strategic consulting services, and at Watts Capital, an investment-banking firm that provides capital raising and M&A advisory services to renewable-energy and cleantech companies. Tim is also the New York metro director for the Cleantech Open, where he was awarded National Mentor of the Year 2012, Northeast Volunteer of the Year 2013 and National Volunteer of the Year 2013. He also serves as an Entrepreneur in Residence at NYSERDA and as a mentor to PowerBridgeNY. Dr. Holmes Hummel. Holmes served as the senior policy advisor in the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Policy & International Affairs from 2009 through 2013. In that capacity, Holmes engaged a wide range of industry and public interest stakeholders to inform policies on such topics as strategic priorities for investments in energy innovation, water-energy interdependency, energy finance, utility business models for the power sector, innovative solutions for addressing climate change. Prior to moving to Washington, D.C., Holmes designed corporate energy strategies for clients of Silicon Energy, an energy software start-up acquired by Itron, and later consulted briefly with the Google Energy & Climate team. Holmes is also on the Global Advisory Committee of Cornerstone Capital Group, one of the voices in the field of sustainable investment and finance. Ron Lusk. Ron is a successful cleantech entrepreneur. He acquired an LED company in 2004 and took it public, and then later merged it with a New York-based private equity firm. Today, it is one of the large LED manufacturers in the world. He is the founder and chairman of Lumetech Group. Ron is a director or advisory director to several companies and private equity firms across a wide array of sectors, and is very active in the energy and oilfield services sectors. Tom McCalmont. Tom is president and cofounder of McCalmont Engineering. Tom has more than 13 years' experience building successful solar businesses, and 35 years' experience developing innovative technology solutions. A serial entrepreneur and inventor with 13 U.S. patents, he has a successful track record of creatively applying new technology to solving real-world customer problems. Tom also serves on the boards of directors of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, JV's Climate Prosperity Council, and is a member of the board of trustees of Muskingum University. Walter has broad and deep experience in energy and renewable-power projects. He is the founder and a managing partner of SAIL Capital Partners, where he co-manages all aspects of SAIL's operations and investments. Under his leadership, SAIL has been selected by the World Economic Forum as a member of its Community of Global Growth Companies and was nominated for Private Equity Manager of the Year by Foundation & Endowment Money Management. Prior to SAIL, Walter served as the partner in charge of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher's Orange County, California office, one of the largest in its worldwide network.

Cleantech Open Appoints Laura Draxler as Vice-President of Operations

The Cleantech Open has appointed Laura Draxler, MBA, MSE, as vice-president of operations. She will join the Cleantech Open's executive team and lead operations at its national headquarters in Palo Alto, California. In this new role, Laura will expand and refine the organization's operational infrastructure, enhance event programming, and implement data management systems to support growth of the Cleantech Open nationally and abroad.

The Cleantech Open Expands into Six Countries, Launches Cleantech Accelerators in Partnership with GEF and UNIDO

The Cleantech Open is expanding its successful program for cleantech startups to six countries. In partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and local executing partners, the Cleantech Open is launching six international cleantech accelerators in Armenia, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Africa and Turkey through a joint initiative, the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme for SMEs. The mission of each national accelerator is to find, fund and foster small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) that can tackle the most urgent energy, environmental and economic challenges in those countries. The Global Cleantech Innovation Programme for SMEs blends local-market experience and networks with proven resources and programs. The GEF has more than twenty years of experience investing in pioneering and innovative country-driven projects that address local needs and deliver global environmental benefits. UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability, and has been supporting the growth of SMEs in developing countries for more than 20 years. Participating countries will have access to UNIDO's in-country resources and to the Cleantech Open's proprietary events, training, materials and an online global platform that connects entrepreneurs to a global network of mentors, industry experts and investors. Each national cleantech accelerator is led by national executing partners and teams in country, hosted by major institutions, universities, and supported by local industrial associations and key stakeholders.
