UL Announces the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Recognizes Two UL Battery Safety Standards
Jul 22 14
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) has announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recognized two UL battery safety standards as consensus standards for medical devices incorporating lithium or nickel-based batteries. The two standards are UL 2054 - Standard for Household and Commercial Batteries, and UL 1642 - Standard for Lithium Batteries (Cells). Consensus standards are standards recognized by the FDA for use in evaluating medical devices before they are approved for market entry. The FDA's center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) believes that conformance with recognized consensus standards can support a reasonable assurance of safety and/or effectiveness for many applicable aspects of medical devices. In the case of medical devices using batteries, manufacturers can now use the proof of compliance with UL 2054 and UL 1642 as evidence of a device's safety and effectiveness.

Through the combination of the UL Listed surface-mounted fluorescent tube lamp luminaire design and the factory installation of the conversion kit, UL eliminates the need to conduct a temperature test on the final product, saving time and money.
U.S. Green Building Council and Underwriter Laboratories Announce Exclusive Strategic Partnership on Building Materials & Products Transparency
Nov 18 13
U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Underwriter Laboratories (UL) announced an exclusive strategic partnership centered on building product transparency and occupant health and safety. The partnership, the first of its kind in the building and certification industry, will roll out several targeted initiatives focused on increasing disclosure, awareness and transparency of building product composition and the manufacturing processes. The goal of the program is to accelerate market transformation and the overall quality and performance of buildings. The first initiative of the partnership is the creation of a joint Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). EPDs are a standardized way of quantifying the environmental impact of a product or system. The joint USGBC-UL EPDs are a solution to increase transparency in building materials and products that are being used in the buildings, homes, schools, hospitals and other structures.
