AEGON USA, LLC announced unaudited earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2012. For the quarter, the company reported underlying earnings before tax was $435 million against $453 million a year ago. Income before tax was $358 million against $385 million a year ago. Net income was $275 million against $331 million a year ago. Net underlying earnings were $321 million against $360 million a year ago. New life sales were $162 million against $146 million a year ago. In the second quarter of 2012, the return on average capital, excluding revaluation reserves, invested in the company’s amounted to 6.6%. Excluding the capital allocated to the run-off businesses, the return on capital in the company’s amounted to 7.8%. Return on capital of the company’s businesses excludes the benefit of leverage at the holding. Lower impairments were offset by a decrease in underlying earnings, a decline in results from fair value items and higher tax charges. For the six months, the company reported underlying earnings before tax was $818 million against $912 million a year ago. Income before tax was $793 million against $811 million a year ago. Net income was $641 million against $681 million a year ago. Net underlying earnings were $594 million against $697 million a year ago. New life sales were $319 million against $289 million a year ago. For the quarter, the company reported impairment charges of $50 million against $76 million a year ago.
